Friday night Boland Cellar Chenin blanc was not only awarded the Best Chenin blanc of 2014, but was also awarded with the prestigious General Smuts trophy at the 2014 South African National Young Wine show. It is the first time since 1952, when the General Smuts Trophy was inaugurated, that Chenin blanc won the trophy, making as statement from the Boland Cellar team: “Our Chenin blanc is the best!”
This was no fluke, as last year, the Chenin blanc from Boland Cellar walked away with the top Chenin blanc honors at the 2013 Paarl Young Wine show. (click here for the article)
The Paarl region is renowned for the quality of the Chenin blancs produced here. This trophy furthers this perception. The cool climate from Table Bay makes growing Chenin blanc in the Voor-Perdeberg area perfect. Moderate rain, cool nights, cool afternoons and not too vigorous soils gives perfect balance to this Cultivar and produces wines with excellent fruit and finesse.
A big congratulations to the Boland Cellar team and the producer(s) involved, and a special congratulations to the winemaker, Bernard Smuts!
