Well, such a beautiful week in the Western Cape! The best weather to be outside, and even better to be amongst vineyards.
So I took one of our producers to go see the vineyards at Groote Post, just outside Darling (South Africa), about 10km from the Atlantic Ocean. The vineyard manager, Jannie de Klerk is a master at viticulture. I have learned a lot from him when I still worked at Darling Cellars. So our goal was to see vineyards that has been given new life, and how he does it. Basically they cut off the vineyards that struggle with dead arms, and re-work the vines like newly planted vines. This gives vines new life, and a second chance to once again produce quality wines.
Everything on this 110ha wine farm (the farm in total is much bigger though) is done to ensure the best quality wines. From labour application, pruning, cover crops, crop control, right through to wine making. After the spectacular vineyard visit and the breathtaking views, we went to taste some wines at the cellar. Two wines that I liked a lot was the Groote Post Kapokberg Sauvignon blanc and the Groote Post Merlot. If you are ever in the area, look them up, I know you won’t regret it.
